Can you hook up 4 amplifiers to 2 subwoofers?

Probably a stupid question, but is this a standard procedure or can it be done?

And what sort of impedance would the amps each have if the subs were DVC 4-ohm or 2-ohm?

For example, hook up four 500w mono amps to two subwoofers rated for 1000w.

either strape 2 amps together or just run one amp to each coil and match all settings.

Well yes but I already have two 500w amps available.
