can subs face left/right in a car or is front/back best?

I'm planning to build a 2 box setup, a box tucked into each corner of my trunk so that I can retain some usable trunk space in the middle. With my current plan, the two subs would be firing at eachother, toward the center of the trunk. I thought this would be fine but my friend voiced some concern that the waves would cancel or not get into the cabin because the woofers are firing sideways. Will either of these concerns be real problems?

may as well try, i've heard of subs back/up with the port on the side being ideal for some vehicles

just try it facing back, facing forward, then facing the sides. if it's a huge impact on performance, you will be able to tell

I have heard side facing setups that sound just as good as backward firing. Go for it //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/thumbsup.gif.3287b36ca96645a13a43aff531f37f02.gif

If the subs are within a quarter wavelength of each other then they will acoustically couple (cancellation can't occur), in a typical boot setup with a sub in either corner they will couple from ~90hz and below.
