Can only hear my phone (AUX) when charging

Has anyone else had this problem? If I play music from my or my girlfriend's phone, I can only hear it very faintly if I turn my stereo (and phone) all the way up. However, if I charge my phone at the same time, then it acts normal and plays at normal volume. My stereo never did this before, it's less than a year old. Also looked in the settings, and the AUX volume is set to normal (barely any difference if I set it to high).
