can i use just 1 voice coil on a DVC?

Chances are the difference you are hearing is because of the shift in T/S parameters due to only powering one coil. This is changing the response characteristics of the subwoofer and how it reacts in a given enclosure.

Remember as was mentioned; Power handling is reduced. But as long as this is properly observed there is nothing damaging about it.

Generally it's recommended not to power a single coil because of the shift in T/S parameters, which many people don't take into consideration.
Doesn't the other unpowered coil act as a magnet keeping the the entire coil/former assembly stationary? So it'll fight the movement created by the working coil. I don't remember where I read that from though.

bad idea,

you need to buy an amp that is matched the either the parallel or series impedance of your driver. Not using one of the coils, apart from having dead mass sit there and do nothing and only using 1/2 of your voice coil, will actually cause some problems. The unused coils are still a coil and the active coil will induce a current in the unused coil and create problems for the transducers. I have seen very odd behavior from using only one coil and I would strongly advise from doing such. Yes your power handling will drop, your Qts will rise, your sensitivity will drop too and you are going to induce unpredictable distortions.

The only reason why its louder is because its getting more power than with both the coils because the amplifier can't produce as much power at 8 ohms or 2 ohms as it can with 4 ohms (for example)

Get a new amp or get a new driver.

This will only happen if the unused coil is shorted (so it's a full loop), if the coil is left open no current can flow through it, which means no induced magnetic field to oppose the drive coil.

I tried this and burnen the hell out of my Sub. I had a cheap power Accoustik though. One coil went out, so I just wired one.

I leared burnt sub smells like burnt clutch. When I took out my sub from the box I felt like grandpa munster after an expereiment went bad. Smoke everywhere.

the person that sells those subs(mark at mach 5) says it is no problem to run these off 1 coil. i myself would run it series. didn'y you just get a hifonics amp? should be 2 ohm stable for running paralell.
