Can I put the sub over carpet?

I'm using some unbacked stretchy carpet on my box and I'm wondering if I have to cut away the carpet around the cutouts or can I just lay the sub on top of it. I'm sure it would compress, but would it seal adequately?

If I have to trim it away, does anyone have a technique for making a clean cut around the sub? This stuff cuts well with scissors but an exacto knife ain't cuttin' it (pun).

It can help with the seal, you still want to use some kind of seal around the back of the moutning flange anyway, but it can help make a tighter fit. If you'r having trouble cutting it, the easiest way is to cut an X through it and then cut away each triangle.

Well, the subs have a sealing ring built into them. I was just wondering if other people bother to remove the carpet under the sub mounting flange or not. Anybody else?

I found mine sealed better with carpet. Built a box and put the sub in until I carpeted. Almost resonated too much on the wood. I actually cut a circle of carpet to put under the sub ring until I have time to carpet the whole box.
