Can I fry my amp with a damaged sub?

Hi, I recently damaged my sub (pioneer champion series pro 400RMS D4), playing hypnotize by young jeezy. The sub was recieving around 500-650 watts, it started smelling funky inside the car and then it stopped sounding loud.

I took a multimeter, both coils read .8 ohms, and when pressing down on the cone they read 1.7-2.3 (they used to read 4.1).

My question is easy, if I hadn't turned down my system at that time, my amp would have been a goner huh?

how are we suppose to know that?

Not every amp but a lot of amps have protection from short circuit, IE 0 ohm load...

Your's may have it, i dont know what amp it is, i'd have to read the manual.

If you keep playing it you do run the risk of damaging your amp.

The load may not be a direct short, but it is still lower then what the amp is stable at and internal current and heat will build up and the amp can be fried.

My suggestion is to not play it until you fix the subs.

Yeah, I swapped the blown sub back to my old kenwood and it keep on sounding fine, the amp seems to be working properly. Atleast that is a good feedback to this cheap amp, Quantum Audio QSA1500, got hotter than hell when playing loud in 2ohms, but never went down or into protect, or produced a clipped signal.

Not that of a bad amp for less than 170 in my country, were the prices are crappy.
