Can I carry a subwoofer on an air plane

Well, can I? I'm flying home tomorrow for the weekend, and I need to get a sub that is back home to my current location. I don't want to check it; they treat stuff worse than UPS, FedEx, and the like. The airline is Southwest. I have a big enough backpack to where I could carry it there. It's weight is under the maximum allowed weight (50 lbs allowed, my 12" weighs 40 lbs or so).

I plan on giving them a call tomorrow, but I was just wondering if anyone here knew from experience or for a fact. Thanks.
