Can a car amp hangle 8ohms?

I was lucky enough to get an old sub for free and I need to test whether it works or not, but being from a home audio setup it has an 8ohm impedance. My amp does 300wrms at 4ohms and 400wrms at 2 ohms, so I'm guessing 8 ohms would be between 100-200wrms. As far as I know, less resistance puts more strain on the amp, so more resistance should be fine but at lower power, am I right in saying this?

Could I use my car amp to test this 8 ohm sub?

Yes. Just divide what it does at 4 ohms by half. Thats a ruff guess what it makes at 8ohms

yea you can run 8...and 16...and 32...

Here is a better way of explaining it... More resistance on the load so less of a strain on the amplifier to draw current.. A higher impedance will never hurt an amp.

yea you can run 8...and 16...and 32...

is there any reason why you said 8,16,32? as in 6 or 12 ohms wouldn't work? Now I don't see any reason why it would have to be a power of 2...

Specially considering when the resistance of a sub is measured it's never exactly 8, it's always about an ohm or so over. (in my experience)

You could always just use a meter on it and see if the Voice Coils are good..
