Can $500 buy amp(s)/comp set/sub?

I am helping a friend out who wants some audio in his car. He said he has $500 to play with. I've been running the same setup for 5 years so I'm out of the loop when it comes to the latest budget equipment. I was hoping to be able to buy a component set to pair with the amp/sub but I'm not sure I can do it within the budget.

Willing to buy refurbished and maybe even used.

Looking for

comp set

single sub (sealed box)

amps (would a 5channel be cheaper then buying a 4channel +mono?)

Can it be done for $500? Throw some ideas at me. Thanks!

Yes it's doable for sure.

Since it's a sealed box, easy to do yourself for price of materials.

For amps, prowl the classifieds.

For comps, many people swear by Phoenix Gold for budget sound.
