burnt ground wire?

I removed this from my battery to ground as a part of my "big three" upgrade. I had a 4000 watt amp plus a couple of kinetik batteries, and everything worked fine for the 10-12 months that I was banging it. I recently started from scratch and did an un-install, and this is what I found. Any ideas on what happened? BTW the wire started out as silver strands and clear plastic sheathing.

Just heat from the engine, or from the wire itself overheating? That's what I'm wondering.

looks more like a mix or crap that gets on it from being under the hood mixed with high under the hood temps mixed with high current draw. Its still conducting right? then there really isnt anything wrong. Discoloration is quite normal

did u have different sized power and ground wires? What guage is that? I had a ground wire melt once. I was using what came in an amp kit. And they had 4 guage for the power and 8 guage for the ground.

Is that near a heat source like a Turbo or Exhaust Manifold? Peel off the heat shrink, if its just discoloration in the PVC the jacketing under the heat shrink will be like new

Engine heat damaged. If that would have been an electrical short, the insulation would have melted all the way off. Re-route it or shield it.

lol... you can use loom, flexible fiberglass tubing (which looks VERY sexy btw, and comes in heat shielded varieties), whatever, but don't run bare wire in your engine bay...

Oil or grease will discolor the jacket of wire as well. If it is a clear silicone jacket, proximity to black rubber will discolor it exactly like what you have. Ask a scuba diver that has left his clear silicone seal mask and snorkel in a dive bag with a pair of black rubber fins.
