Builing a subwoofer from parts...

I have toyed with the idea of building a subwoofer from scratch for a while. I dont know really how difficult it is. I would basically buy everything in parts ie. the motor, the basket, the spiders, the leads, the coil, cone, dustcap, etc and then just bulid it. I have never attempted to build a subwoofer before and wanted opinions on the level of difficulty to build a sub.

It's really not that difficult to glue a sub together. Understanding the technology behind it and making it strong and worth a crap as well as looking nice.... totally different story.

I have a what I would consider a good base knowledge on assembly and function. There are recone kits that are already mostly pre-assembled. I would then buy a motor and then a basket and then drop in a recone kit. OR is it harder than im making it

No it's not hard at all.... especially with a drop in recone.

You should have some soft parts made for a specific motor that you would buy, and put it together yourself so you know it would work.

Thats what I would do.

dont need soft parts special designed for a custom woofer there is plenty of parts out there. but to use parts you have never used before and know what the outcome is will be imposible.

i am willing to help you out with parts and or advise but in reality its cheaper and will be better built if done by a expert...

I like the idea of a custom woofer and would have no problem paying to have one made for me. here is the basis of why I asked my question origionaly. I am building a home theater system for my house and im designing the subwoofer box to be a downfiring box(I prefer a downfiring box in home theater) I wanted to do a plexi side so that when you look into the box you can see the basket and motor. The thing is that I love the look of a oversized motor and interesting basket but generally you dont see low rms woofers with a big motor and basket since they dont need to handle a ton of power. My home theater reciever does 250rms into the subwoofer channel @1.5ohms so Im going to look for a 2ohm load and the sub will get around 200watts rms daily. I planned on buying a big motor and a cool looking basket and then putting them together and buying a recone kit that I can just drop in. Im not sure if that is stupid or if I should still give it a try to assemble a sub in that way.
