Building an Amp

Has anyone ever built a real amp from parts that you can buy at a science surpluss store or a radioshack/Mouser? I can't afford to buy an amp but I was wondering if maybe I could rig an amp up. They have ferrite cores and magnet wire and all kinds of things to make torroids and deals. I know this is probably a stupid or insane idea but I'm just curious. Has anyone ever done it successfully? Maybe even unsucessfully? (Still be neat to see a failure) I have about 90$ and need a 1000w amp for my SX.

Are you really well versed in differential calculus such that you can design your own or do you have a set of plans to go from? In either case it would be much, and I mean much, cheaper and easier to just buy an entry level amp. Most amps worth bothering with are built on a 4 layer PC board. I don't know anyone that has the capability of making one in their garage. Then there is the matter of getting all the output devices that you need. These aren't cheap. Don't forget the power supply capacitors, high current resistors, schotky diodes, etc... And then you have to figure in the heat sink. Trust me, not nearly worth the trouble and certainly not cheaper than just getting a basic amp.

125$ basic amp or 200$ failure. You can decide lol. It's not like building a computer you can't really build the hardware and screw it together. If you want to do it from scratch it would be difficult and dangerous. Say you actually do it, i'd bet more on the chance of it malfunctioning and catching your interior on fire than working for over a year. Do you want 1000W peak or rms also?

I've built amps before...but not solid state ones //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

Sorry to come across like this, but $90 for a 1kW amp is laughable.

I'm probably looking for 1000w rms. I am looking for an amp for my 18" SX. I have been saving my money and I'm up to 90$ lol... It's very slow going.
