break in time?

i just bought a pair dub mag audio 6x9s, and they said the pair is 200 watts rms, and 400 watts max. i hooked them up. i have an alpine 9843 deck, and with the bass about halfway up (+5), they sounded good. but when i turned the bass up to max (+10), they sounded really poopy, and distorted the good bass notes really bad, i thought they were gonna blow. my HU says it puts out 45 watts to all 4 spkrs, so i thought the dubs would handle the top bass output easily. are these just crappy spkrs, or do they take some time to break in or something?

(16 watts RMS/45 peak x 4 channels)

You HU gives those speakers about 10 - 16 watts a channel which in not near enough to sound crisp on bass notes plus those speakers really are not that great at handling lower bass. This is why they sound good at low volume and crappy at higher volume. If I were you I would add an amp that puts out around 100 watts per channel RMS and crossover the 6 x 9's around 75hz and leave the low notes to the sub. I have actually left in factory speakers before but used an amp on them with a crossover and they sound 10 times better.

could i just get a crossover for them without the amp to eliminate the lows?
This is a cheap and easy way to crossover those speakers. It is at 150 hz but since it is a 6db crossover they should still play plenty of midbass.

As far as another amp you could use Y rca jacks to split off of the one output you have but then you would lose individual control of the two amps. Another option would to be to use a line level converter off of the headunits speaker wires, the same wires that you are currently using to power the 6x9's and turn them into rca jacks then you would have two outputs.
