break in necessary for new surrounds?

Ok, it looks like so many people have different opinions about breaking in...

I'm getting my subs today, after getting new rubber surrounds.. (the guy is a PA speaker pro, and asked if I wanted the cloth-type instead to see me freak out..)

well, the sub is over 6 years old, so I think the spiders and stuff has been broken in like a mofo... there's no tear in the spider, the basket is still wonderful, etc, etc... I just need to know if I need to break in the new surrounds.

I'll probably leave it overnight so that the glue will set. I gave it to him last night, and he was about to leave.. so I'm guessing he's doing the job right now, and there's no way i'm gonna risk the gasket flying off the subs again...that's the initial reason why I had it repaired.

I trust his workmanship, he's been working with my uncle(in the PA business) and been repairing speakers for over 30 years now...

p.s. you should see this old man pick up two JBL 15" PA speakers joined together and move them around while he's sitting down... not a twitch. Talking, laughing as he's swivelling in his chair and repositioning allo the speakers. Not a grunt. A small old man with thick glasses and a pipe in his mouth.. I'm still amazed...

Do what Josh L. does, just crank em the first minute you have them, that will break them in nuff.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

werd..or just stand on the sub like i did:D

seriously though, eventually the surround will be pushed to its limit so why not do it now?//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Break in not needed - let the glue and all cure though.

I trust you didn't have the surround styles changed when he did replace them though - as that would cause a shift in the drivers actual specifications.

well, the subs sound better than before, actually...

my subs have an xmax of 8mm, and they look the same size, only different, due to chemicals, I'd imagine...

if you aren't stretching the suspension when you're breaking in a sub, then eventually it will get "stretched".

lets take the girl analogy and revise it. take a big wang and stick it in her (this is what jlaine is doing:D). now it does hurt for the girl (sub) at first, but when you stick it in there again, its stretched out enough that it'll handle the big wang without pain (stress for the sub).

now what if you broke it in slowly and easily? take a small pee pee (rangerman's) and stick it in there (its gonna hurt for the first time anyways). after that, you crank up the volume some more (bigger wang..this time its dreid's). its gonna hurt because its not stretched out enough from the first time. now crank up the volume some more (jlaine's pencil) and its gonna stretch more than when you had the volume lower (dreid's). now all of the sudden you crank it full volume (this is where i come in //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif). gonna stretch it out the most since the volume is at its peak. now what are the chances of the sub moving even more if the system is at full blast and nothing else changes? so whenever i feel like putting my wang in there again, i know that the girl (sub) is ready for whatever i got.
