box

It would decrease the excursion on your subwoofer because the cone would have much more pressure pushing against it. But woofers aren't air-tight are they? I don't think they are. At least I know some aren't.

so would vaccuming out the air make it like a larger box. not sure if that would work but seems like it would be a good i dea for people with little space if it works

I don't think that would be the case.. the sub has to work harder to come forward if there is a vaccume, if you push air in then it's gotta work harder to come in.. both of those actions require the sub to work harder to move, like a smaller box..

And I don't think subs are air-tight either.. the foam around the surround will probably leak over time.. and I'm sure there are little gaps here and there where air can seep out.. and wood doesn't make a good pressure bottle or vaccume bottle..

When you are talking about a 'sealed' box and requiring more power to move the sub becasue of more resistance.. that's mostly from the fact that the sub is moving 'fast' and air can't seep/****** through the surround (or any of those tiny leaky spots).. sealed is relative.. mostly air-tight as opposed to having some escape route for air (dont thin air moves through ports? make some too small and listen to the air noise, or crank a sub and dangle something like string or graduation tassles infront of the port and watch them jump like nuts.. In a sealed box, you don't have air movement like that..
