both amps went into protect mode

i was playing some pretty bass heavy songs for a little over an hour, then all of a sudden while i was driving both amps went into protect mode. pulled over, checked the sub, no smoke. no burning smell. pushed on the cone, it seems to be a little harder to push in, maybe its just my imagination because im afraid something happened. the amps came back on, now everything works fine. was this just basic protect mode? got too hott? i didnt turn it up after the amps came back on, but everything worked still. i put it on 20/30 and the sub cut out (like i said i have voltage problems sometimes) but it came right back, think maybe i was just pulling to much juice for to long, and they need to rest?
