charlie sheen rocked this set out...

Been absent from this thread for quite a while...now I'm bringing it back with some home audio to change things up a little bit //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Here are a couple of my favorite speakers in my collection...On the left, my best pair of Technics SB-7000a's. On the right against the T.V., Infinity Reference Standard 2.5's (or RS 2.5's for short). For a size comparison, notice the receivers on the left, and the T.V. is a behemoth ancient 60".

The Technics are fantastic. Their imaging, accuracy, and output are top notch. They have a very unique sound to them that I can't really describe. All I know is that they bring extra life into music. I have thrown 200wrms at them, and they wanted more. Super underrated. Also quite efficient at 94.5db/w/m. I loved them so much, I got me a second pair //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif It was their little brothers, the SB-6000's, which got me hooked. They utilize the same tweeter and a similar, but smaller woofer (12" as opposed to 13.5"). I actually stole the tweeters off them since the 7000's were blown, and replaced the 6000's with some proper Vifa replacements (which sound very nice as well!). Both pairs have a very nice and complex crossover section, and attenuation for the midrange and treble (the kind that doesn't distort when you turn it up; think of them as limiters). I will NEVER sell these speakers, they are my babies.

The Infinity's are some pretty insane speakers. In todays money, they were in excess of $5,000 new, and worth about $1k to the right buyer in today's market. There is a good chance that I have the best condition ones left in existence, considering how rare they are and how nice mine are. I hate to get rid of them, but the $1k is calling me considering I need to pay off my $2.5k oil pump replacement...The speakers are rated at 200wrms, but will take 500wrms all day long! That's ridiculous for a pair of home audio speakers. They utilize two EMITS (one rear and one front firing), two EMIMS, and one Watkins 12" woofer. While it may not look like much, the woofer is the real star of the show.

The Watkins woofer is dvc, but what makes it even more unusual is that the coils are different resistance! It was designed this way to reduce resonance, increase low frequency extension, flatten out the frequency response, and increase output at the lower frequencies. It's also a great sounding driver. The drawbacks? How much effort and money they had to put into the crossover section! The caps are very large value (and size!), it has multiple transformers...it has more components than some car audio amps do! The pictures don't do it justice.

On to the pics...

Oh, and that little speaker on the 6000 is a Technics SB-F1. Cute huh? Get this - that little 3.5" driver can go down to 50hz! Even more...the cabinet is full 1/8" thick aluminum! The tweeters are horns as well. The build quality, as is for the 6/7k's, is fantastic, and they sound great. Surprisingly easy on the ears, and quite efficient. Love these little guys!

The following pic is my second pair of 7k's. They both had the woofers replaced with Eminence drivers. Not quite as good as the originals, but I didn't expect them to be.

Time to brag //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Here's what I got everything for...

Infinity's: $350 worth in trades (items that I had accumulated from a total of $350)

Technics SB-7000a's: First pair shown, $100. Second pair, $50!

Technics SB-6000's: $100

Technics SB-F1's: Traded a couple pairs of interconnects I had lying around //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/up2something.gif.dd110ecf3ae4b76050d87598f2f8de7c.gif

Also...

For the SB-7000's, the metal rectangle around the tweeter is actually the magnet. Pretty beefy! The midrange driver has a large motor as well, and it has a surprising amount of excursion for such a small driver.

Haha, This is cool. I'm too young to have had any of this gear but it's a nice collection you got goin. Is the whole old school thing just sentimental/collectors stuff? Surely gear this old cant sound better/louder than the current technology.

Excuse my stupid question, Like i said. Too young to know.....

How young? Im only 18 bruh //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

How the equipment sounds depends. But typically, older equipment is built better and thus sounds better as well.

18, Geez, i'm 26... though most of your gear looks like it came out before i had a license. I had an old earthquake handed down from my brother for my first car and thats about it. Everything else has been new. I guess since i know no one that collects/has older gear i just never got any. Plus you dont see much around in Australia.

Looks cool though, I'll keep an eye on this thread //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Yep...I've only been in the car audio game for two years and home audio for one year...I had nobody to look up to either, nobody knew anything or ran anything but kicker or JL around here. If you put in effort, you can go far in no time at all. All of my gear has been purchased with profits made through dealing audio equipment on craigslist. Not a penny "out of pocket" per say.
