today i got a 1000watt alpine ZR from a buddy for free and he said it has a blown voice coil, just to see if it worked i hooked it up to a stereo in my house and it made some rattling noises ( not in a box) so i figured its working, cuz i know u get like nothin w/o a box. how ever i turned the bass up and the sub just died. now it wont work at all. my friend also gave me a 1000 watt Kenwood DB, i hooked it up and it worked fine and i actually heard music from it so i know the voice coil is ok how ever the face on it or w/e the front is called is totally ****ed.

so my question is why did that sub all of a sudden stop working? and is it possible to swap voice coils? any help would be appreciated.

ps- i know alot about electronics, but im a "newb" to the whole car audio thing so if its possible to fix, i will be able to do it.
