what causes the sub to blow?

like i have a a few subs that are blown/ dont work... most of them have burn out VCs,,

1 of them.. everything looks fine.. just doesnt work.. when push down on the cone.. it makes like a crunch noise.. so wha in the sub doesnt work?

the motor gettin burn out??

wha parts of the sub can go bad to cause the sub not to work?

i got a thump sub from a friend of mine(wasn't working) and when i pushed down on it it made a crunching sound, so i took off the dust cap(he didn't want it back anyways) and the VC had come off and was just mangled all in there, so maybe that's what happened to yours.

when i had my first series of polk momos... one just seized up and since they are SVC, when that one blew it automaticly threw 1200w on the other one instead of the 680w x 2. i was pretty mad when that happened.

one of them totally locked up and didnt even move at all. other one just smoked pretty bad.

What causes a sub to blow? That is a good question. Usualy, the answer to this question is, too much power capacity is being strained on your woofer. For instance, say that you have a 1,000 Watt RMS amplifier. At volumes that are not full blast, you do not get 1,000 Watts RMS going to you subwoofer. Amplitude increases (for speakers) by wattage increasement, to the speaker. But, at full blast, you would have 1,000 Watts RMS running to you speaker. So, if your amplifier is a little strong for your subwoofer, but you can still hook it up to you sub, just don't have it on gutbusting loud. Otherwise, your voice coil, will overheat, and be destroyed.

Usualy, when a sub blows, and it looks like it is in perfect condition, that means that most likely the voice coil has melted. This is due, to power capacity that your sub could not stand, because of intense heat to the voice coil. Sure, your cone and surround is okay on the sub, but way down deep inside, the voice coil has been fried.

duuuuuuuuuhh way to answer the already answered question farmboy......(he didn't ask what causes, he asked what happens to the coil.....)

Originally posted by i3abyjay25 yeah, i knew all that.. i know wha cause it to blow.. i just wanted to know what it did to the speaker...

From what I have seen (as the flamed JBL was testament to) when the cone stopps moving and the coil is "stuck" its like the VC has welded itself to the magnet.
