Blew an RE SE today

I haven't posted here in a while but here's my story.

I was cranking that Celph titled "so Cold" song today louder than I've ever heard when all of a sudden the volume cuts in half. Shit. Got home took out subs and tested each voice coil and one of them doesn't work. My setup was:

2 12"RE SE d4

custom 4 ft^3 tuned at around 33hz

Sundown SAZ 1000d @ 1ohm.

Basically what are my options for fixing this thing? Is it worth it to find a new motor? Can I have a local repair guy fix something like this?

Just give me info.

Thanks

Fred

The SE isn't worth reconing....unless you just want to do so for the hell of it.

I'd worry about why the sub was damaged in the first place. Shit happens. Learn from the mistake and move on to something else.

Recone kit?The motor is bad not the cone.
nope..

If the cone still moves freely but you arn't getting a reading on one coil then that means either a small section of winding fried, a tinsel lead is torn or burned, or the connection where the tinsel lead meets the coil lead fried...

You can trust me on that.

It's probably time for a recone either way.

Partial agreement...
What did you not agree with? Saying they aren't worth reconing? I believe it's true. If you buy the parts and have the ability to do the recone yourself, that's fine. But paying for the materials, the actual labor and shipping to and from isn't worth it. You can buy a working 12" SE for $120-ish...

Yeah, if he can find a cost effective way to accomplish the labor, it could be worth saving. woofers still has them for ~250 new.

I agree with fixing the cause and possibly moving onto something else if the wallet allows it.

I'm not really familliar with the sub but you should be able to beef it up with a larger coil to give greater xmax & power handeling then a stock SE. I definatly agree that shipping is a ***** if you have someone else do the work, though.

But why pay to upgrade both subs when he doesn't really have sufficient power as-is? One of his subs is still functional as well.
