I am building a box, in which I will be painting the inside (straight up I dont know much about using vinyl on the inside) my pops said do Birchply over MDF, he tells me it flex's less and looks better painted granted its more expensive but he also said it is lighter. I went and checked it out at the local Home Depot, and I could only confirm the last 2 things (lighter, more expensive). For the extra 20 bucks I would use to buy a 4x8 sheet ($49.88 vs MDF $22.91) could I expect a better overall box by using this (i believe ) 7 ply birch ply for my box? It still is 3/4 inch.

I'd get the 11ply birch that HD sells. But if you're painting it then it will make NO diff. Just scuff the MDF with sandpaper and paint away. Unless you want a "show car" finish then it takes a lot more work...

I thought Home Depot sells 7 ply birch?

So MDF vs Home Depots Birch PLy yall still say go MDF? Price is a non issue at this point.

birch has a nice finish, but personally i like working with MDF over birch. it's easier, no splinters, and the wood doesnt split as much. maybe the birch i had was just cheap, but i'll only use birch if i'm going to stain it. otherwise it's MDF for me
