Big business opportunity...

I thought that too when I was an authorized dealer of JL Audio but look, you can find them all over the net now, especially ebay.

There are currently 8 items from this company online- and 3 of them are competitors used amplifiers //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

EDIT- on ebay I meant //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

I *may* be opening my own shop up. From an investment standpoint, I won't have to put much money down (only the first months rent to start off with). I will have a few product lines that I will probably not have to do a buy-in for, so I won't need ~$3000 for a a buy-in from just a singly manufacturer. It's a fairly busy area, and 2 of the local shops were recently shut down (One was bought out and closed, the other the owner decided to focus on dealership work and close down his shop).
I've got some time to think about it...and while I don't have any experience from a business standpoint, I think it's a great opportunity for me to start off with.

I just don't know what to do though....//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/uhoh.gif.c07307dd22ee7e63e22fc8e9c614d1fd.gif
If people are closing shops by you or selling their shops, chances are they were not pulling in much money... Reconsider location.

One was sold to 2 installers from another shop, but they closed it down before they even re-opened. The other was more centered on dealer installs (factory navigation systems, alarm/rem. starts, etc.). This helped business a ton...

more than half of business failures in this business isnt lack of customers its lack of the shop doing the right things to gain the customers
BBQ's and Bikini contests every weekend will bring in the customers //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

There are alot of good suggestions here posted earlier. Business plan, ALOT of research about what brands sell good around your area, etc. You should absolutely carry a few high-end brands you like, but ultimately a business is to make money...so don't be afraid to stock the shelves with Audiobahn, Pyramid, Pyle, and the liking, if that's what keeps the bills paid. Offer up your knowledge/ information to people who ask for it, but don't "push" products even though you know they may be better.

The radio station installs are a great idea, if you can trade that for some airtime. Also, get in with the local car clubs, hit the schools and universities and make friends with reputable people that can spread the word around about you. The high school kids and college students will likely be the majority of your business...so get to know what they like. And get some stickers/vinyl decals that you can give your customers to sport around, and get your name out there. The more people see a name, the more trusting they will feel about buying from you.

Alot of popular shops around here get customers in their store with other products like auto customizing (wings, wheels/tires, airdams, foglights, etc). I know it won't be easy just starting out to have a complete wheel/tire rack on display with plenty of stock, but let people know that stuff is avaible if they want it.

Good luck man..

If and when you get your shop opend up maybe you should do a demo vechicle to show off you or the installers talent . That will pick up alot of bussiness. That is what custom sound did here locally. Wasnt anything like a wall. But sounded very good. Good luck though.
