Big 3 for a 2005 Silverado

I've noticed the wiring in my newer silverado is much mroe complicated then my older one. First the alternatore has a small 8 guage wire dropping down from the alt to a box terminal where a 4 guage maybe 6 gauge looks a bit to small to be 4 size wire connects and goes to the battery but that same wire branches off to anotehr part of the truck . I couldn't trace it well, Also the ground seems to go under the engine block and I cant see where in the hell it goes. If anyone has had any experience doing a Big 3 on a newer silverado or gmc drop me some idea's or info.
