K, did the Big 3 including sanding down the contact points on the chasis.

What's the best way to cover the bare metal to prevent rust?

I have touch up paint and vaseline available so far. I'm thinking the touch up paint would be best.

Would there be any harm in spray painting it? The metal to metal connection wouldn't get any paint on it, so would it matter?

I decided to put my touch up paint on it - where I can access the bare metal not covered by the bolt - and then I'm going to add grease on top of that.

The biggest problem is going to be seizing.

I usually just hit it with some dielectric grease and forget about it.

I think you're just overthinking it.
