big 3. 17 volts??

Did my big 3 on my 94 camry today. On idle im sitting at 17-18 volts. Is that right..or even safe for a stock battery or amps?

also..its a stock alternator

Or is my multimeter just freaking out?

Could be the alternator is dying. Regardless, that is NOT safe.

Your regulator is fried or inside you have something dead shorting so the alt is charging full tilt right now.

do not run it with that much voltage, you will fry everything.

and i to say its your alt...

turn that car off and RUN before the battery swells and explodes, or something else fries and catches fire.

Multimeter problem. Change the battery in it.

Hm. So after running it a bit and testing it again. Its idling at 15.4 volts. Is that better?

Better, but still not good. What kind of battery do you have? AGM's don't like higher than 15v. When I first got my new alternator on, it charged at 15.3v-15.4v and my car's battery warning light came on.
