hey yall, i need a good primer for a test box. will be painted with black enamel (matte). what is the best primer for mdf? i say specifcally because mdf sucks up liquid like a black dude in front of a jug of kool aid. i hate those interior primers (kilz) because they don't dry hard and they clog up the sand paper on my sander. the minwax sanding sealer is ok, but it takes ALOT of it to make it even close to being able to paint. so what would u guys recommend? thanks

MDF is a real nightmare to paint. Kiln works well, but you are not going to get the smoothest surface in the world doing so. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

I spray MDF with Slick Sand filler primer.

A light coat at first. Let that sit and soak in, if any. Usually no soak in with MDF.

Then a couple heavy coats on after that and sand it smooth.

Then paint over that. Never had a problem and have 10+ boxes done like this.

i picked up some rustoleum white sanding primer (glue wash ---> primer) and my other stuff. i have tried most of the things around. i have found that shellac based primers are the best in the end, but take FOREVER to get right (coating it until you can't see the wood is a PITA).
