BEST Headphones? (yes I searched)

I am looking for the best sounding headphones on the market today. I need the big bulky ones for home and also earbuds for the gym. I have owned the sony ex71's which I really liked, but have had problems with each set I have owned. I would like to spend $150 or less for the earbuds. BTW, I have had the Shure e3 & e4's and have had better fart sounds than these things produce.....just personal opinion I guess......

For the actual headphones, I am looking to spend $400 or less........I listen to all kinds of music......but NO country (lol)

Looking for opinions from people that have actually owned them.....

I love my AKG K501's for any music strong in the midband. If you find some reviews they all pretty much agree that these are among the most natural cans in the midrange. Much less coloration than Senns will give you. They are a bit weak in the sub-bass so metal/rap/techno are not the best types of music for them.

If you want something a little stonger in the sub-bass the Grado RA-1 is a good choice, as are HD600's and AKG 250M's.

look into sennheiser HD655's - i have a set and they are freakin sweet, but i do NOT know what "best available" ones are.

if you are going to go that route, you better have a 2~5wpc tube amp for your headphones. *enters jack*

any review I read it says that the hd600s are good for classical music......I need something with a broad spectrum of musical reprecussion (sp?)

sennheiser 650's are arguably the best there are. check out http://www.headphone.com for reviews and what not. But, spending tons of $$$ on headphones is useless unless you have a good source (NOT an ipod). Earbuds should be fine for portable use, just dont expect to be blown away if you use the 650's with a walkman.

I heard them bose ones are very good as well when i was searching for some price on ebay is not to bad and the reviews have been great from what i have read.

What about them custom ones that someone was selling on here with the soda cans. And the bass shakers lol
