Benefits of a larger port area

I know the basics on this one but havent had time to do the testing in the past.. as an example. . Take a 12" sub ported 2^ft ,tuned to... 35. By most avg builders some where in the 12-16 ^inches per foot rule comes in. So by keeping the same tuning but just jumping your port area from say a 2x12 ( 24 sq in port ) to a 4x12 or so ( then also making the port longer )

Just wondering what sound or spl differences are noticed

 
larger ports TAKE UP more room, not make up for not having enough, unless i'm missing something.

more area= less velocity= no port noise, is all i know
Kinda of what i was looking for

umm you realize its cubic feet of the box x 16 not sub size right? suposidly thats the optimum for the HD3 I dont know about other subs.

Yea.. On avg u use about 15 square inches / per cubic foot of enclosure size right.. avg..

Mainly wondering if there has been any noticable changes to the ear or mic with larger port area..

example

Having a standard manufactures spec box with like 24 Sq inches port for a 12 in a 2 ^ft enclosure tuned to 35

or

Building the same size 2^ft box ( net ) but just making the port to 48 inches ( 4x12 or something along those lines)

 
My new box is 4 cubes, and 113 inches of port //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/naughty.gif.94359f346c0f1259df8038d60b41863e.gif I havent gotten a chance to hook it up yet, waiting on my new amp, but I'll let you know what the difference is with this and my previous box of 85 square inches.

 
^^^dam im at 9.3 cubes with 107 inches of port.....thats alot for only 4 cubes cant wait to hera how it sounds

how do you figure? 4 cuft x 16 = 64sqin. he is doubling it. Im looking to do probably 6-8 4" flares on 5 cubes myself staying around thw 16 mark for my MT. and thats like 76 sqin @ 6 or 102 @ 8

im missing something .. where are you getting the 16 from.. Am i wrong with saying a 9^ft box with 100 square inches of port is about a 20"x5" port
