Before I buy

Hi. I'm about ready to purchase a sub and amp for my bmw 325ic and i'd just like some help if there is some better equiptment in my price range

sub: ROCKFORD FOSGATE HX2 POWER 2000 WATS

this is on ebay and i see it going for about $200 US I'd like to stay in this price range although i dont mind the size so much. 12-15inch is good. So, whatever is the best in that size/price range.

amp:Hifonics 'BX1205D' 1200W Mono Amplifier

This is the same price as the sub $200 US. I've heard alot of good things about this amp and that is why i chose it. I'm pretty new to all of this sub stuff but i build custom computers for a living and i dont see how this could be much harder. Basicly i need a list for parts.

Music: I listen to Rap with Heavy bass mostly (aka Lil John and the eastside boyz)

My budget for the 12-15inch sub and amp is about $400-500

Edit: I'd prefer a 15inch sub and i'm looking for SPL not SQ (although i would still like to listen to music out of it)

I've heard about those power hx2s getting really loud. Hopefully someone thats used them will respond.

That is no lie... Those HX2's are some monsters. With 1200w to a single 15, in the right box, you should be VERY happy. (I used to own a pair of 12's)

And that amplifier is a bit over rated, but it should push the sub nicely at around 900-1000 w RMS.

Maybe power it with a PG Tantrum 1200.1 instead, its a little more reliable than Hifonics BX series and will do 1400+wrms at eithe 2 or 4ohm.

Seems a bit out of his budget though... Hard to find on under even $250, but you could look, or save up a few more bills.

I've changed my mind to useing this sub

Alpine SWX-1242D 12 inch Subwoofer

It runs dual 500w rms coils at 4ohms which i think means 1000w RMS at 4 ohms. Correct me if i'm wrong. Now, should i run 2 500w RMS 4ohm amps into it or is there a 1000w rms amp i can get for about 200 bucks on ebay? I only want to pay $500 total for the sub and amp but i really want this sub. Should i go with the SWR which is half the power handleing and use a smaller amp? I can get this sub for $250.

My car is a BMW 325ic

just found a Phoenix Gold Tantrum 1200.1 Class D 1539.5 on ebay for about $170. How do i overvolt this to 14.4 though? that's the only way i can get enough power to run this at rms. Otherwize it'll be at 250w at 4 ohms. I have a new battery i think but a stock alty

That amp does not do 250w @ 4 ohms... It it rated to do 1200w at 4 ohms down to 2 ohms. To get a 14.4v stable electrical system, you could try doing the big three, and getting a deep cycle battery for under the hood. I doubt this will bring you to a true 14.4 though, so a HO alt should really be brought in. But the amp will do fine with a standard 12v system, should do somewhere between 900-1000 wRMS

the Alpine Type R subwoofer you said, is 500w RMS(continuous) power. It has a dual voice coil. The sub itself does not determine how much power you have, it determins the power you need, speaking generally. If it is a dual voice coil 4ohm, that means you can run one subwoofer at either 8ohm or 2ohms. It gives you different wiring options, that's about it.

Stick with the HX2 and get a relatively decent amp.

If it is a Dual 4ohm sub, get an amp that is rated aroudn 1000w at 2ohms, like a JBL 1200.1 That is agreat amp, there are plenty for sell on this forum, and it will do waht it says.

wow Thx. That's helped me alot. I've read alot of good things about the alpine and it seems to be the word on the street. So a 2ohm amp at 1000w is what i need not a 4ohm amp at 1000w. Cool. What about the amp i mentioned? It seems pretty good. For about $250 shipped is there a better amp for SPL on ebay? If you really insist on the HX then i'll get it but it just seems to me like the Alpine is in a different category than the HX
