Be Nice to Your Neighbors
Being nice to your neighbors may be a no brainer to you, but for some people, it’s a challenge. Although it may be hard to tolerate their dog barking or their loud car, it’s in your best interest to play nice with the neighbors. You never know when you may need their support or act of kindness. If you’re nice to your neighbors, they may be more likely to dig you out if you ever get snowed in, let you borrow tools, help you in the event of an apocalypse, talk to you when you’re lonely, borrow a cup of sugar, share their extra potatoes, give you their old lawn ornaments, call the police if someone is stealing from you, babysit your children, invite you to parties, or lie for you if you commit a crime and need an alibi! More people will also come to your neighborhood BBQ or get together/party if you are a generally nice person. If you are nice to them and their children, people may be nice to your children too. They may invite you over to swim if they have a pool. Cha-ching! That saves you money on water park fees. When neighbors communicate well, they are able to settle disagreements civilly. Passive aggressive behavior can lead to an escalation of the problem. Being kind and courteous to your neighbors ensures a positive and friendly atmosphere. If your neighbor is funny, they may tell jokes to you. If you find them funny, your level of stress will go down and you’ll be less likely to have a stroke. Positive interactions with people lowers high blood pressure. If they like you, they may be less likely to report you for a loud/rowdy party, kill you, steal from you, burn your house down, or call animal control if your dog bites someone. Who knows, your neighbor may be rich and not have any relatives. When they die, you could inherit their estate if you had a good enough relationship with them. There are also less selfish reasons to be nice to your neighbors, like the fact that you are being a decent human being and treating someone else with respect and compassion. Being nice to people also makes you feel good. Plus, what goes around comes around. Fyi, karma is real! If your neighbor comes home at 2:00 in the morning with their straight piped truck, hold your tongue or politely ask them to refrain from doing so in the future, because you never know when you’ll need a solid alibi.
