Batteries smoking..

I was playing my stereo tonight and I noticed an AWFUL smell. It smelled like rotten eggs. When I opened up the back, my batteries were ****ing smoking and causing the smell.. I disconnected all the wires and set them outside of the car. They are hot as hell and I hope they aren't ruined. It looks like their is some sort of residue on the battery. They are dry cell Odyssey 2150 batteries. Anyone ever heard of this happening?

ive seen some alts go crazy and put out like 16-17 volts for no reason and fry the battery

I have an MLA module and two alternators.. the new alternator was charging the rear batteries but my battery under the hood is fine..

Well, I have had a dedicated alternator charging them with an MLA for about 2 weeks with only 400 watts of draw on them. do you think that could have over charged them?

I know exactly that smell and exactly what you are talking about. I had my honda civic on day and it started smelling like rotten eggs. So I pulled over and checked out everything. this was before I even had an audio system installed. So I whipped out the voltmeter and checked the voltage my stock alternator was pushing out 18 VOLTS!!!! Yikes. So I went to my auto part store got a new alternator and than get a new battery at sears. Went home and installed them both and it is fine. So in conclusion it is your alternator.

His MLA i think was set to about 15 volts, i think that would be enough to fry the batterys with no draw for a few weeks. If it was 18 volts, and steady, i'd have a battery to set him up with in the back //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif.
