Bass boost or no bass boost, whats your setup?

Setting gains via DMM is ok for a burping setup but is totally useless for a daily. You will get different readings for different sources, songs etc so it is inconsistant to say the least. It might give you a ballpark figure but that is it. The best way to adjust an amp is by an experienced ear, fact.... Polo.
Yes.

best way would be with an o-scope
No.

How far your gain is up is very dependent on the signal your amp is getting.

If you have 2v pre-outs, gain will have to be higher than with 4v.

So "being safe" by setting it 60%, is really not "safe."

so.... i guess using the dmm is not a real reliable way of setting gain? my deck does not give out a 4v signal thats for sure.

Ill do it this way (correct me if im doing anything wrong)

I will do the 50hz test tone gain setup..

I will then play a song which i believe to have very hard hitting light dimming bass and check voltage through dmm while song plays..

If i notice the voltage go past 44.7 then the gain is too high, then again if i notice that the voltage doesnt reach 44.7 and stays a fair amount under then the gain is a bit too low?

It is an effective way for a beginner to learn without screwing anything up as long as his speakers can take the power. It takes some experience/knowledge to do it strictly by ear.

Music will not reach the same voltage as a test tone. You can use a -3db tone to get a little more power out of your subs though and that will closer max wattage. Music, since it is dynamic and recorded differently cd to cd is not accurate at all to measure power.

ok ill use that one. I have had sub setups in the past and before i used to play a test tone and i would turn the gain up until i heard it distort, then i would turn it down.

I will be using a Phoenix Gold RSDC 12" 600w RMS 1200w max subwoofer and my amp can only give 500w rms max anyway so using the -3db tone should work out fine //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

ok so with my calcs.. 500w x 4 = 2000 and the sqrt of that is 44.7213595so 44.7 volts is what im looking for //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Sweet..
Wrong . I don't know why this is the common belief. 44.7 volts will NOT equal 500watts wired at 4 ohm.... anybody want to guess why.... Ahhh i won't make ya wait. Because of imp rise. Setting it at 44.7 volts will likely lead to not getting the full power out of the amp. It also depends on the recording level of the track. It can take a while to get the feel for tuning amplifiers? Chances at at a wired 4 ohm on tones you will see 5 to 10 ohms. So if the freq you tune at happens to sit at 10 ohms. 44.7

at 10 ohms is roughly 210watts RMS. You have to know imp rise to figure the figure out correctly and recording level of tracks etc

****, this is getting really complicated :|

Whats my best bet then for making this setup perfect?

I want my sub to get the full 500w i can deliver..

should i account for imp rise and recalculate at 5ohm?

so 500w x 5 = 2500 sqrt(2500) = 50v ??

Nope honestly you will hear different ways. personally (not saying it is right, but always worked nicely for me) Took a test tone at my peak note and turned up to the volume I would listen to it at. Gain it till it quit gaining then I backed it down a hair

Hmm, well i think ill go for that //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

would my peak note be the frequency that my box is tuned at?
