Basic question

I have a basic question I need help with. I am looking at getting a new head unit, 2 subs, a 2/1 channel amp and new front speakers. Is it possible (and recommended if possible) to have the 2 subs running off the amp and the speakers running straight from the head unit instead of being amp powered. Thanks for any help
