The reasoning of not reccomending a bandpass is primarily that they are very limited in the frequency response they are capable of. For all practical purposes, they are good for impressing people while they are on the shelf in a store. Now, if your listening habits deem that bass within a given 10-20Hz span is acceptable, then it wouold be ok for you. However, if you are like most of us, you are wanting to hear all your woofer is capable of across a wide frequency band.
Ported and sealed enclosures are more suited to this, as less cancelation occurs within the actual enclosure itself. A ported enclosure has the advantage of great output, however is limited to a certain frequency range which is determined by its port size. Even so, its frequency range is far greater than that of a bandpass enclosure. A sealed enclosure has the advantage of high power handling and fairly impressive output. It is the optimum environment for the widest frequency response. This is why it is the most popular in design. It has one downfall however, it is not as efficient of an enclosure.
Concerning your initial question, the dual-reflex would offer better output potential, based on its design alone. A little more tricky to build, however, worth the efficiency gains.
The ported or sealed enclosures would offer a good deal more to your system, I would reccomend looking into these firstly.
