bad sound after setting gains?

Use a -3 or -6 dB test tone. That will give you your bass back with music.

methinks this is your problem b/c using a test tone with no attenuation leaves your overcompensating for a voltage that will hardly ever be seen. i'd try the -3 db test tone.
