i keep looking at all these head units and cant seem to find one i like. so heres what im thinking ... if i buy an eq and just use a laptop or mp3 player or a smartphone to provide sound input to that. do you think there would be a drastic drop in sound quality?

what are you looking for out of your head unit that you can't seem to find?

they just all seem to lack the functionality i am looking for. i want something that has high and low pass filters usb in with a good file navigation system and the ability to recognize at least a 500 gb hard drive self dimming lights and am/fm radio. all with out having a motorized screen.

it can be done right... same basic principle i use when doing android tablet/ipad installs... had a few, where the owners didnt want any HU at all.. the one thing you have to understand tho, is that alot of eq's have a low pre voltage... so your clipping point will be lower

depends on the set up you want to run... an 6 or 7 channel eq is best... and you can run a pac line level converter... will work well
