I believe AWD automatically kicks in when it needs too....
4WD you have to switch over yourself.
Not really. AWD is always on, but it's not necessarily locked center diff. The ratio can be 60%/40% to the rear or otherwise. It's pretty much the same as 4WD, all 4 weels get power all the time, but how much will vary with AWD. 4WD is locked (usually), with a 50/50 distribution ratio and probably doesn't always have traction control like AWD almost always does.
