Audioque HDC and its twins at CES

ah.. have you dont seen armageddon? when they talk about where the components are made in, on the spaceship, peter stormare sayz: their all made in taiwan!

and i have to add this.. if it´s real good quality, they use swedish steel //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

well then he must be working for aq too.... lets face it man if they engineered it from the ground up, aq's sub wouldnt look identical to it, unless the chinese sold the design to the aq guys which is very possible
The HD3c wasn't just a sold out chinese design. I can assure you that. As I'm sure you already know, you can spec those chinese motors out however you want them. They all look about the same, but can be totally different. Washer height, ID/OD, and cooling cuts are all top plate options. Pole O.D., pole vents/chamfer, cooling vents, etc... are all pole options. Bumped back plate, # of magnet slugs etc.. are all options. I know I have personally tested several different variations of the basic China motor design in the development of the HD3c, and they all performed differently. DJ worked pretty hard on the development of the HD3c. It's definately not as generic as one might think.

As far as that basket goes, it was a DD development. They wanted something better than the standard 12 spoke china that everyone else uses, so they changed it a little, added more room where needed, and beefed it up where needed. They had the option to keep it "exclusive" for a rediculous sum of money, or to let it go to free market for a much reduced price. Knowing full well that the chinese would find a way to knock it off even if they paid the "exclusive" fee, they opted to save a crap load of money and "allow" it to go free market. So naturally it's going to be the new "12 spoke china" since it's better in just about every way it can be.

Yes they look the same but as has been stated, how many companies used the old 12 spoke basket? A lot and in general all of those drivers looked the same. Look at the Mag D2 and the Fi Q, many people thought they were the same driver when in fact they aren't.

why does the Zapco have a pressed paper cone in some pics and the Aq style carbon fiber in the other pics??

See the difference between the first two pics and the third pic? I wonder which one will go into production probably the full copy with carbon cone.

Konaki was the first company with that motor actually for sale as far as I have seen. I imagine that each company has put their spin on the motor internally as far as the gap, pole extension, etc. Without taking a caliper to them the external dimensions did all appear to be darn near the same, though -- I didn't look to see if the Zapco had a pole vent, so I can't say yes or no on that.

I'd be surprised if any of them did NOT cross drill the poll since the Konaki, cheapest of them all, does have the poll cross drilled so it is very likely a completely stock t-yolk.

Also... the Konaki does have the lowest quality moving parts despite the motor similarities. The Zapco and American Bass units had way nicer spiders, and I'm sure the AQ does too although I haven't seen it yet.

I imagine there are substantial T/S differences as well based on what each company thinks works the best for SPL.

What dd sub is this coping?
The motor(s) in question are almost exactly dimensionally the same as the 9500G externally. They are taking a good model for SPL as far as top plate height to coil height ratio, suspension compliance, mass, and motor strength and producw a cheaper driver to achieve that -- these "knockoff" motors don't have the level of cooling of the 9500 motor, though, and won't handle as much power, especially long term. The machining that DD does to the motors for cooling isn't cheap, and DD does assemble in the USA so that adds to their cost and tends to keep them together better at high power.

Some note that the knockoffs, like Konaki, have a less massive magnet... yes, but that is so they can *more* accurately copy the level motor strength -- they aren't cutting out as much steel for cooling so less magnet is needed to "copy" the motor strength minus the cooling. Too much motor would make the copies pretty useless for daily applications.

But yah... that is the Cliffs version of how these are DD knock-offs.
