colorization is a specific or broad range of "changes" an amplifier makes to its input signal thus changing its sound . a clean amps input and output should be the same only bigger on the output side.

how would you figure out if an amp has good colorization or not?

Though, I'm going to predict that you'll soon be flamed for stating that amps have sound quality.
"An amp is an amp" you'll hear, "they all sound the same".

Just wait....it'll come //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

I'd just like to say I TOLD YOU SO //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif

Anyways....people have taken the "a watt is a watt" argument to mean that all amps sound the same.

yea if all this is true, then why do people go out of their way to buy PPI, viper, orion, and all that crazy good shit that is supposedly crazy good shit when they could go buy a hifonics that is rated at just as much power as them but half the price?.
Reliability, more power (underrated vs. overrated), features, quality, better customer service, etc etc. Many reasons; and that all assumes that there are no sonic benefits (which I don't want to get into).

to determin sq you ALWAYS need a few refference systems (a good clean home system or a local shops display of home speakers set up to audition) to go back on plus a test cd or 2 that tell you what to look for in the tracks. you might think it sounds difficult or its dumb but its nice knowing how to shape up your car system to sound its best. guarantee you would notice a difference even if you dont have an eq simply haveing everything in propper phase by position makes a huge difference.

when looking at specs of an amp, is there anything that would indicated better sq then others? what exactly is thd, s/n ratio, dampining factor etc?
until cea 2006 amp specs go into effect (not 100% sure if thd and so forth are covered in that) but there are a few different ways to measure it to look cleaner than what it is. basically the best advice i can give you is try to find out how good the amps eq/and x overs are in the unit as they make a bigger diff than anything. besides the "power" that is the biggest factor between a pyrimid amp and lets say an xtant amp. there isnt really a measurement for colorization unless you graph up the input and output signals. but if you have a refference to go by you can always tell how each sounds and what changes. also notice i have a solid outboard processor so my amp choices might also be different than someone who uses their amps built in features.

i used to have a hifonics bx1000D and now have the tantrum. both have the same input voltage i do believe. when i used a dmm to set my gains, the hifonics started to clip, or reach the determined voltage, way before the pg did. so is that a sign that the hifonics didn't have the same sq as the pg?

in a sense what you are talking about is power what im talking about is how they both sound at the same unclipped power. probly not that big of a difference but see people ARE different and there is something about your new amp that makes you hate the hifonics. i dont hate on hifonics (its a better cheapo line than what we had when i was growing up, but then again i wouldnt use it unless i had to.)
