any shop employee thats isnt smart enough to realize that sticking a type x in a random *** ported box and expecting it to sound nice enough to sell for several hundreds of dollars is a douchebag. it's taking a chance of not only it sounding like ***, but if the box specs were too far off it could kill that sub even with only that much power u were throwing. im NOT suprised whatso ****ing ever that the cone hot and you could smell the coils. If i was the owner of the shop and found out that happened id fire that kid.
90% of ur subs sound is box/install dependant. the type x is a great sub, you have a great amp to power it, but withotu a good box itll sound exactly like the crapp *** you heard.
type x would be a great combo with that amp (if u can get the coils to match that 1ohm load you need). all you need is a much better box built to specs.
if i were you, search elsewhere for a type x, get a good box, and go back there and let the kid hear it how it SHOULD sound.
