I'm tossing around the idea of getting a computer built. Right now I have a 2.0 Athlon, with 256 RAM and an 80gig HD. I want to do a ~3ghz processor, at least 512 SD, and ~200 or so gig. Also want a good DVD burner. Approximately how much am I looking at spending for such a computer?

are u intending to stick with AMD or do u want intel. cause i dont think AMD has a 3 ghz but they do have equivalent performance one's like the ATHLON 64 3200+, also why do u want SD ram, and i have a WD 200GB SATA HDD and u only get like 186GB for use.

Bleh, meant DDR.

I just want something in the 3ghz range, I've seen the 3200's.

Processor speed is not it's all cracked up to be.

RAM is a major factor and your current system has very little of it. I just read a review from HP where they took one of their servers with 512MB or ram and doubled it to 1 gig and got 5x the response times. They then doubled that to 2gigs and got 12x the performance of the original 512MB of RAM.

I probably won't do any gaming. The only game I've played regularly is Counter Strike, and haven't played that in almost 2 months now. I'm sure I'll be doing a little gaming, though.

Thanks for the links

I haven't had problems with the Athlon, I'd like to stick with AMD- unless someone can show me a reason not to
Its all about personal preference. Whatever brand processor you go with, don't skimp and get their lesser model (not speed, like getting a celeron instead of a P4).

Not including links with the following because if it blows up I don't want it on my conscience. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Pricewatch.com right now has a P4 3.4 ghz prescott, cpu, fan, Asus motherboard for $370 shipped.

Leaves you needing RAM ($55 for 512 MB PC3200), HD ($93 200 GB Maxtor), Case ($20 - $50), your burner ($74 for Lite-on 12x +/-) and power supply ($20 - $40).

I'll let you add it up.
