Atomic 3k hates 8v preouts

My Atomic AT3000.1D absolutely HATES my Eclipse CD7200mkII. Just looking to bat around some ideas on a solution. I was thinking I could maybe find a line driver with adjustable output?

The main issue I'm having is after I get >1/2 volume the amp cuts off & goes into protect. Have to power cycle & it'll turn right back on and play at low volume. Voltage is solid. No clipping.

Try setting the gain properly. I've run pre-amp into the Sundown 3K (same board) and had good results. When I ran a pair strapped I actually gained .6 to .8dB by using the pre-amp to them.

What do you mean by properly? I set it with a Fluke DMM. What pre-amp are you using? I'm fine until the headunit goes over 6v (just over half listening volume) then it protects.

Is there a "subwoofer" setting on the HU? Sometimes this is just an adjustment to the preout voltage. If its got that setting you could turn it down..
Yes. I've already tried this. Subwoofer setting down, gain up.. etc. Worked it both ways.. no luck. I've exhausted all methods I personally know to try with no luck. Hence the help thread. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

I asked Jacob @ Sundown (since the 3k is based on the Atomic) and he said they're just really picky about anything above 6v.

Used an old Phoenix Gold (made in USA era) pre amp on my pair of Sundown 3K's. Never had issues, then again I was running pair strapped to 2 ohm so you still needed a little gain.

Alternate option use one of those attenuator knobs (that's just a variable resistor with rca's in and ou)t. They're under 20$ and should allow you to reduce the voltage going into the amp.

Sounds like what I'm looking for. It's just odd that none of my other amps have had any issues w/the voltage.

Hm, I dont understand why turning the subwoofer setting down wouldnt fix the issue. Essentially thats dialing down the preout voltage. (or it does on some HUs) Are you sure the 8v is the problem?

I said the same thing.. and no I'm not 100% sure this is the issue. This is just the next step in the long list of things it could be.

I guess the easiest way to rule out that problem would be to throw another HU with 4v preouts in there and test it. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif If the problem remains, then move on to the next step.

I ended up finding out what was wrong with the amp. Before it was shipped out the seller took the back plate off for a gut shot compared to a Sundown 3k. When he put the back plate back on he mounted it backwards. There is a piece of plastic covering only one end of the back plate to keep it from hitting the amp's internal parts. It was simply on the wrong end & any time the amp was bumped (or bass hit) it would go to protect due to the back panel hitting the internals.

Pulled it off, spun it around.. fixed the issue 100%.

I figured this out the same day I posted this thread. Just forgot to bump it.

That could have been a hard one to figure out. I'm guessing you took the plate off to examine the board for damage?

Yessir. Took it off to check for loose connections. Saw that.. figured hell, I may as well give it a shot. Boom. I was so dumbfounded.. LOL.

Lol I bet. I probably wouldnt have figured it out til after I tore everything else apart trying to figure out the issue. Thats if I would have even figured it out at all. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif I'd say you got lucky on that one..
