aren't mono amps suppose to be "D"

maybe he used the search and wanted an answer so rather than create a thread called "what does the D stand for anyway" and get flamed with the "search button" smilie he followed his heart and did the right thing.. I think this has to be accepted and noted to prevent contradiction.

Good definition , IamDeMan

Maybe a little over some of our heads.

The D class amp carries a looser power supply, "unregulated", this does make it a more effiencent amp (and cheaper), but not better...

that's why it doesn't get as hot, it depends more heavily on the cars power supply, that's why it's so important to use such a heavy gauge wire, the Big Three, and an alternator that puts-out.

A class AB amp still depends on the car's power supply (greatly), but just not quite to the extent of a D class

The AB class amps have a "regulated" power supply, and therefore won't spike as much. The power supply helps compensate for drops in voltage.

That's why they get so hot...

and, that's why they cost more. More cost goes into the power supply.

Something like that...

where most of us tend to use D class amps for our subs, and we have all heard that SQ dosen't matter on low freq. But, not completly true.

A good class AB amp (watt for watt, not amps of equal dollar value), will outperform a D class amp, even on a sub (more punchy, quicker responce and less distortion),

and, yes there is distortion, even in the low frequencies.... harder to hear, but noticable to the SQ head.

But, yeah they are a hell of a lot cheaper, not a lot of us got $1000 for a good class AB amp,

not, when you can get a D class with 1500 watts for under $500

Crossover distortion, mostly...due to the fact that the output device switches on and off to "fill in" the complete sine wave. Class A amps are the only design that gets entirely rid of crossover distortion, because the output device never shuts off. That's where the inefficiency comes in as well, because it's on, all the time, whenever the amp is switched on.

yup. noticed a HUGE difference with 2 idq's from my viper 1200 and another a/b
