Are all $200 subs to ugly to invert! Jeez

He's in a position where mainstream is pretty much all there is. The majority of underground/enthusiast brands stick to certain basket styles: 12-spoke, 4-spoke, DD/AQ style, then the TC TI baskets in all their glory. Generally speaking, mainstream brands have baskets that look better since they cater to a crowd that actually looks at aesthetics over performance. If he REALLY doesn't like those main 4 designs, then there's not much else. Plus, those companies have the means to tool a new basket for every sub they manufacture.
The Type-R's really aren't bad. I've heard them so many times that I can honestly say they are a great intro sub; good price/performance ratio, pretty stout, don't break the bank, pretty good output, and nice sound quality compared to all the other mainstream brands (key words here).

Of course, if I were in your position, I'd go with a pair of custom built subs that were painted to whatever color you like, but that would obviously cost more.
Dumb question prolly but how do i get custom subs? Also if i wanted a sub that was good all around as far as quality goes and sounds good with all music what would you say to go with? forgetting about the inverted idea just based on quality for a good price like what around the alpine is.My installer said to get the memphis m-class cause they match my amps and sound good with all music. Is this true.

Send Resko1 of Experimental Audio Solutions a PM. Check out my sub he rebuilt for me: http://www.caraudio.com/forums/subwoofers/505317-my-esa-built-3hp.html. His work is top notch, without a doubt.

There are a lot of subs out there which sound fantastic and can get plenty loud for all types of music. Matching brands does nothing what so ever; a sub and amp of the same brand will not magically sound better if they're paired up with each other. Yes, there are some companies that make amps and subs that are really good, but don't get into the mindset that matching them makes them even better. Also, before people start flaming you (it's bound to happen), just know that your installer is only that: an installer. His job is to push brands and make money, so take everything he says with a grain of salt. If you get past the trolls, you will not find a better place for information than this forum.

Good subs off the top of my head that are around the $200-$250 price point:

TC Sounds LMS-R

Sound Solutions Audio ICON

Sundown SA-12's

DC Sound Labs Level 4

There's plenty of stuff in the classifieds section as well, so don't be afraid to shop around there. There are some subs in there that will destroy anything that's around their price point, you just have to really do your homework and be patient with this stuff.

Ok ok I lied, $270 for the LMS w/ free shipping. But the Level 4, I've definitely seen them around the $200 price point used in great condition. Brand new, the price is all over the place since DC likes to list prices differently for everyone.
