Blah enough of the Sony bashing, lol.

The shortest way I can put this: Sony used to make pretty good car audio--very good head units and they were a respectable company in car audio circles. However along came 1999 and they went downhill seriously. In a period of about 4-5 years they made nothing but pretty poor HUs many of which were unreliable; I remember perhaps 2 HUs they had in that period that were actually high quality and worth buying. Flash forward to about 2004-2005 and they started to turn things around and are again making some pretty nice HUs.

Problem is, that reputation has followed them and far too many people say nothing except "Sony sucks" these days. People that never had any experience with the mobile ES gear of the 90s, and people that just continue to assume "Sony sucks" without actually looking into their new gear in the past couple years.

So don't worry about the "Sony sucks" comments you're going to get--I think you'll find the BT head unit from them is going to be quite nice and very competent. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

I have ran a sony head unit in my last install, cant remember the model number but it was a mid level unit, i loved it and in fact am planning to use the MEX-BT500 in my next install partly due to the Sony 10disc changer I already have which i really like.

I have read alot of reviews on this unit and the only main complaint i have seen is that the BT feature is not so great, most users have stated that if the unit is down low in the dash, its really difficult for the person on the other to hear you due to the different factors of road noise, unit being installed low in the dash, etc. Also the microphone for the BT is behind the faceplace, go figure.

if i dont go with this unit i will definately be going with a different sony head unit, personally i feel the EQ is the heart of the system, all you need is a basic head unit to play a CD and then a high quality EQ to define the soundstage.

just my two cents, i vouch for sony head units, the subs and amps....well.....yuck! i wouldnt mess with any of that if someone paid me

Hi speed

Let me say that I also read allot of complaint from this unit but I still bought it, once I start playing with it all I can say is the best BT unit I have ever try or had ..... the microphone behind the faceplate is NOT A ISSUE ... i been using for over a week and no complain about it .... I used it alot because I drive twice a week for 1 1/2 hour trip x 2 meaning 3 hours that spend on the car and I make allot of phones calls.

The unit will hold your contac will shut down when a call comes in and will do so many cool stuff .... I highly recomend it ...... the remote has many option ... has a full keyboard and easy to manage.

The EQ is alright not great but I think is ok for a headunit with BT for under 300.00 dollars

One more interesting stuff .... I read here http://www.css.ap.sony.com/UsefulInfo/BT5000_CompList/NOKIA_MEXBT5000.htm

that Nokia 3230 will not work on the unit and guess what ? I DOES WORK!!! yupi!!

Im using a 3230 Nokia and works great with the unit ...... guess Sony did not do there homework very well

well thats good to hear.....i wont purchase it until i see it on display with my own eyes first, just have a thing about it seeing what i buy......

but the onboard EQ's on most head units are ok but i meant more like a seperate EQ component, that addition will make a system just shine....

i ran an alpine 3342 EQ, i bought it like 10 years ago and i used it for every bit of the last 10 years in various installs, man it was the difference of night n day

im looking at the clarion eq 746 (i think) to go with this Sony BT head unit when i get around to it, they just dont make EQ's like that alpine anymore, pioneer and kenwood have a couple of versions but i dont want full size in-dash units in the dash along with the sony

well enjoy the new sony unit......as soon as i can find someone with it on display i will definately be getting my hands on one soon

new member here, my wife bought this unit as a x-mas gift for me. i had my doubts about goin sony, but it works as advertised. phone functions well, i can also stream mp3's via bluetooth from my cingular 8525. sq is compressed, but it does have a certain wow factor. just hope the unit lasts for a while. i think as long as the unit is mounted high on the dash the mic works fine as such as in my case. any vids i have on my storage card also can have their audio streamed via the bluetooth connection, audio sync is fine.
