nothing against you, but i see it differently, having being in their shoes. maybe they joined because it would help better their lives. you also "volunteer" to work your job to better your life, correct? the difference is that these people are getting shot and killed in their line of work. there are also a lot of people that didnt join because of the benefits. i've met very wealthy people that joined for different reasons, being they thought it was the right thing to do, or family traditions or whatever. i know quite a few people that are in Iraq/Afghanistan at this very moment. i have the utmost respect for all of our servicemen and if it weren't for these people (very few i should say, in comparison to the overall population) we would not be able to enjoy our freedoms (which are getting ever-so-thinned). i know this war isn't for our freedom, or anything to do with our country at all, but the people are there doing their job and getting killed while representing our country. and for that i can respect them
Both valid points, however i see it as:I Feel you Req about life on the ship... BLOWS... no pun intended. ( ya know whistles and all the like..nvm) ACE, hey man, oorah for helpin all of our brothers, but come to think of it, it is our light hearted competitivnous(sp?) between the branches that kind of brings us together in our own sick way. But remember you are not the only ordinance technician out there in Iraq, you have Marines, Sailors, other Airmen, and soldiers in the sandbox making sure we can get the bombs to the fight. OORAH!Caliboy.. Are you trying to say that many of my brothers and sisters in arms joined because we had nothing better to do or no other way to better our own lives? We CHOSE to fight for our country. It IS a sacrifice that we make. Not being around our families, our friends or even our own country a lot of the time. As Req was saying he is stuck on a **** boat 8 months out of a year, sharing a small *** room with at least 4 other sailors, probably hot racking and the only space he can really call his own is about 3 feet wide, 6 inches long, and he only has 2 and a half feet of clearance before he rams his head into the overhead beneath another sailors bunk. he has approx. 6 inches deep of storage space underneath his rack, and one of the small gym locker room style lockers to keep all of his personal belongings.
We are TOLD what to do and how to do it all day everyday. We have orders and regulations governing all that we do.
If you foul up on a job, you get fired right? If we foul up, we get demoted, loss of all pay and benefits and thrown into club fed?
see my comparison? I know i only hit very few points but there are many more.
I am not saying we are Any better people than civilians, but typically we are a lot more disciplined and have a much higher work ethic and a sense of comradarie
it is part of thier job, it is what they choose to do. they are compensated for what they do and given a wide open chances for career development in the future. They have an incentive for doing what they do is all I am saying; we in society make it out to be much more pretigious than i really see it to be.
