For a beginner, the kawi 250, gs500, or a sv650 would be good choices depending on how you feel after taking the msf course, which I would highly recommend. Get a used one, beat the piss out of it, you will likely drop it. Then get something nice after you have learned.

Other than that, get some good gear, get full insurance, and ride like noone can see you.

I only pay 50 bucks a month for insurance, I guess because it isn't in my name. If it was Im sure it would be tripled since I'm 17 years old now. I first got my bike when I was 16 years old it is a 1993 Honda CBR600 F2, a lot of chrome on it, lowered, pipe, stretched a wee bit and other little mods. Great bike nice power and pretty comfortable, only downside is that it is geared for drag racing so it seems 6th gear comes when 3rd is supposed to come.
