Anyone have any experience building computers?

What kind of DVD drive should I get? and what are some name brand power supplies? Will 550W be enough?
Antec, Enermax, really there is a big list of good companies. OCZ makes them now. I would say 90% of my pc's have Antec in them. Price to performance is good. Now there are WAY better. But I usually like to pay no more than 120 on a psu. 550 would work with what you have listed, but a 650 would be more of a safe bet.

Get modular too. Great benefit there because you just plug in what you need and your not stuck with a bunch of extra wire in the case blocking the air flow.

I would sell you my 64-bit XP but I'm saving that for my next build when ddr3 comes out //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Pl8er, you know what you're talking about, I'm glad theres another geek on here (and thats not a bad thing, we can run circles around everyone else)

I would say over 600w for that build.

Just put an OCZ in my friends comp. It runs good but its kinda loud.

Thanks for the props //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

I agree that 600watts would be plenty. Most of the CPU's manufactorers are focusing on reducing wattage and saving power and as long as you don't go SLI (no reason with a 8800GT with today's games (minus crysis)) you will be running great.

Your first choice was WAY better. Although some of the big companies will put LED's in the psu, it just seems counter-productive to me. I mean, the point is to produce power for the system and it has to use some for lights.

I have not used that brand either and I would consider it 2nd tier at best.

Bit more power, I believe the same price you were looking at and 80% efficient.

If you want a truly sleek looking case, get a Lian-Li. They cost a pretty penny but god **** those are some good looking cases! Except if you put tons of LED's in them they look dumb. Keep it clean. You will thank yourself later. I have an X-navigator and that thing is loud and bright. I have to turn it off every night just to go to sleep.

Here is a 650W one no idea on how good it is though

That one or the Antec would be about the same. Both good companies, I'm partial to Antec, but only because I like the cases they make.

have you choosen a case? If not, check this out. What is your budget anyways?

I love that case. Puts the powersupply on the bottom in its own space and blows the air out the back. Also seperates the hard drives.

1k budget
Yeah, you will have NO problem setting up a sweet rig on that.

Have you figured out hard drives yet?

If not, consider the western digital raptor drive as your boot drive and get a larger slower drive as your storage.

A 74gb Raptor with a 400 or 500 gb storage would hold just about everything (unless you really like to download)
