I just bought an 01 4runner, and I would love to see what people have done for sub boxes and front midrange. It looks like only 5.25's fit in the doors, or maybe smaller. Has anyone made a 6.5 fit???

And where the hell would you put your aftermarket head unit?

I have a 99...but if IRC, in mine it's 6.5's in front doors and 5.25 in back doors. I'd have to go look, but I believe that's correct. I know one of the doors takes 6.5 and the other takes 5.25's.

Yeah I was looking this stuff up and I believe your right. Apparently some people are having problems with decent speakers being too deep for the front doors, but I think I can work around that. Do you have an aftermarket head unit?

You're lucky, I have a 91 4runner and my stock locations only fit 4" front and rear. I'm the type that likes stealth installations so it's not as noticeable to thieves and usually use the stock locations but I had to cut into the doors to fit my seperates. Can't even use kick panels without relocating the vehicles computer.

The front doors take 6.5's but the space is real shallow. the rail that the window follows down is right behind the hole for the speaker so you're gonna have to make some sort of spacer if you want a deeper speaker to fit. I used Alpine Type R 6.5's and had to rig up a spacer and then cut out pieces of the plastic bracing on the inside of the door panel so the cone wouldn't slap it and get ****ed up.

To make 6.5's fit in the rear doors you have to remove the original speaker bracket and just sink the speaker into the sheet metal. Unfortunatly with the Type R's being so deep again, my back windows don't go all the way down now, but it's not that bad, only like 3 or so inches from going all the way down.

And what do you mean where would you put an aftermarket HU? Obviously it replaces your stock one just like in any other car:eyebrow:

PM me if you can't figure something out cuz I just got done putting in all new speakers, tweeters, a HU, sub, box, and amp rack in my 01 4runner so maybe I can help you out if you get stuck on something. good luck

Yeah I have a panny 701U, why?

My brother has a 98 Limited...we fit 6.5's in there, anything bigger affects with the door panel as stated above. The type R is sligly larger 6.5" driver than the Arc ACS mids we put in, no issues with cone hitting the door panel in our install.
