Anyone have a 2006 Jetta?

Hello all,

I got a 2006 VW Jetta TDI a few weeks ago and am debating on what, if any, stereo mods I am going to make.

I do know I am not going to replace the head unit. I am considering replacing some speakers and adding two subs. The trunk is huge, I am thinking perhaps a JL 1000/1 amp and two W7 12 inch subs back there.

I really don’t want to rip up this car so I wanted to see if anyone out there also has this model car and has done any mods, if so can you post pics?

I also need to know how the grills for the speakers come off, do they pull off or must the door panels be removed? I want to check to see before I try anything.

I have been looking for a site or posting that will tell me what size and impedance speakers are there (I have the head unit with Sirius and the in dash 6 disk changer) and if there is an external amp or not.

How to hook into the stereo to get a pre out converter for amp? Can the factory speakers be easily replaced with better ones (I am leaning towards Infinity Kappa) how difficult to run the wires to trunk for amp and subs, etc that kind of stuff.

I want to do as much of this as I can myself to save some money, so anyone who has done any mods to this system please let me know as much as you can.

Thanks!!

The head unit, and component speakers are the first thing I'd replace in any car.

If you wanna see what will fit your car, you can goto: http://www.crutchfield.com/S-KJS3sTlwEaF/cgi-bin/autoinfo/autoinfo.asp?cm_re_o=5yBpAgfl*_kBgLv*ctzfdbfl

Usually the door panels need to be removed, its not too hard.

You should be able to get that information off of crutchfield.

It isn't hard usually, you take the door panel off, then unscrew a few screws and mount the new speaker. As long as everything was the same size as before, you shouldn't have to do any mods to your mounts. Running wires isn't too bad as long as they aren't really big like 0 gauge...you'll want to run your rcas on the opposite side of the power wire, if you're using 4 gauge, or 8 gauge power wire, it's not bad at all.

Its a VW so running wires is more dificult than say a Honda. The panelling is much tighter and harder to pop off. Unless you have the Premium system (I think its still Monsoon) the car is not Factory amped, MAKE SURE YOU USE A HARNESS when replacing the radio because the dealer needs to be able to plug the factory deck back in to use their scan tool to diagnose and clear codes. The door panels do need to come off to replace the tweeters in them, there are hidden screws behind the armrest. The armrest snaps and rotates out. If you are just using a amp for subs and not for speakers than do not worry about running the RCA's down a different side of the vehicle, its not gonna matter. If you have experience and the proper tools go for it on the install, but if you arent real competent in this than its worth the extra money to get it done professionally. Its a NEW car and no reason to unnesasarily **** it up.

Thanks everyone for the replies, I appreciate it. I did look at the crutchfield site before my post but it does not tell me much about what is in there now, only what will fit.

I think I am going to forget about speakers and if anything, just add an amp and subs as the factory speakers don't sound too awful bad and why rip up the door panels on a new car anyway.......

I think I may be happy with some more bass punch, like I was saying perhaps two JL audio 12w7 or a couple of soundsplinters and an amp like the JL 1000/1 that can turn on and off thru speaker input, so that way no turn on wire has to be run.

Thanks again and keep the ideas coming if anyone has any more!!!
